Licence bonds
Required for registration with a city or a state licensing body.
Texas has no statewide general contractor licence, so bond requirements come from cities and specific trades. That makes them easy to get wrong.
Contractor licence and permit bonds guarantee to a city or agency that you will work within its rules and codes. Because Texas does not license general contractors at state level, the requirement varies from one municipality to the next — and the bond form the city wants is rarely interchangeable with a generic one.
Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Plano and the surrounding municipalities each set their own contractor registration and bond requirements, and specific trades regulated at state level carry their own. Amounts, forms and terms differ.
Ask the permitting office for the exact bond form and amount before applying. A bond issued on the wrong form is not a small administrative problem — it will be rejected, and the permit waits.
Most licence and permit bonds are modest in size and can be issued quickly, often the same day. Underwriting is generally a credit check rather than a full financial review, so a clean personal credit history usually means a low rate.
Where credit is impaired, bonds are still available, typically at a higher rate. It is worth starting the conversation early rather than discovering the position two days before a permit deadline.

We are an independent agency, so we place your contractor license bonds across several carriers rather than fitting you to one company's product. That means a genuine comparison, and someone to call who is not a call centre.
There is no statewide general contractor licence. Requirements come from individual cities and from state-level licensing for specific trades such as electrical and plumbing, each with its own bond rules.
You pay a percentage of the bond amount rather than the full sum, and the rate depends largely on credit. For most contractors with reasonable credit, licence bonds are inexpensive.

No. A bond guarantees your compliance to the city and, if it pays a claim, the surety will seek reimbursement from you. Liability insurance protects you. Most contractors need both.
A bond is not insurance. It guarantees to somebody else that you will do what you agreed — and if you do not, you repay the surety.
