Business Insurance

Church insurance for congregations and ministries.

Churches run buildings, youth programmes, volunteers, vehicles and events. The insurance has to cover a small institution, not just a property.

Religious organisations carry an unusually broad set of exposures for their size. Alongside the building there are volunteers, youth and children's programmes, counselling, transport, fundraising events and a governing board — each of which needs cover that a straightforward property policy does not provide.

Abuse cover and pastoral counselling

Where a church runs children's or youth programmes, abuse and molestation cover is the most important line in the policy. It is frequently excluded or sub-limited on general forms, and carriers writing this class expect documented screening, supervision and reporting procedures.

Pastoral counselling is a separate professional exposure. Where clergy provide counselling, cover for that activity should be confirmed explicitly rather than assumed to sit within general liability.

Volunteers, boards and vehicles

Volunteers create both liability and injury exposure, and Texas workers compensation generally does not extend to them. Volunteer accident cover fills that gap and is inexpensive.

Directors and officers cover protects the board and leadership from claims about their decisions. If the church transports members or youth groups, commercial auto and hired and non-owned cover are needed alongside.

Working with us

What we do differently

We are an independent agency, so we place your church insurance across several carriers rather than fitting you to one company's product. That means a genuine comparison, and someone to call who is not a call centre.

  • Confirm abuse cover is included at a meaningful limit if youth work happens
  • Document screening and supervision for anyone working with children
  • Add volunteer accident cover — workers comp will not extend to them
  • Carry D&O for the board, which is unpaid but still accountable

Common questions

Church Insurance, answered

Is abuse cover included in a church policy?

Not always, and where included it is often sub-limited. For any church running children's or youth programmes it is the most important cover in the policy and should be confirmed explicitly.

Are our volunteers covered?

Texas workers compensation generally does not extend to volunteers. Volunteer accident cover fills that gap and is inexpensive relative to the number of people involved.

Do we need D&O for a church board?

Yes. Boards make decisions about staffing, finances and property that members can challenge. D&O covers the defence, which volunteers should not be funding personally.
