Business Insurance

Food truck insurance for a kitchen that moves.

A food truck is a commercial vehicle, a commercial kitchen and a public-facing business at once. Each of those needs its own cover.

Mobile food businesses fall between the categories most insurance is written around. The truck is a vehicle, the equipment inside it is a commercial kitchen with propane and hot oil, and the operation happens on other people's property — at events, breweries and private bookings that almost always require a certificate before you can pitch.

Three policies, not one

Commercial auto covers the truck while it is driven. General liability covers a customer who is injured or made ill. Property or inland marine cover handles the cooking equipment, generator and stock. A gap in any one of them is a gap in the business.

Crucially, most commercial auto policies stop covering the operation once you are parked and trading. The moment the serving window opens you are relying on general liability, and a policy that only covers the vehicle leaves the trading hours uninsured.

Event certificates and additional insured

Festivals, breweries, corporate bookings and private venues will almost always require a certificate naming them as additional insured before they confirm your pitch. Requirements vary and some ask for limits above what a basic policy provides.

We can issue these quickly, but the useful step is telling us what your typical bookings require so the policy is written to satisfy them from the start rather than being endorsed one event at a time.

What it covers

The parts of a food truck insurance policy

Commercial auto

The truck itself, on the road and between pitches.

General liability

Customer injury and foodborne illness claims while you are trading.

Equipment and stock

Cooking equipment, generator, refrigeration and inventory.

Event certificates

Additional insured wording for festivals, breweries and private bookings.

Fire and propane

Cooking fire exposure in a confined space, which carriers underwrite specifically.

Workers compensation

For staff working the window, and required by some event organisers.

Working with us

What we do differently

We are an independent agency, so we place your food truck insurance across several carriers rather than fitting you to one company's product. That means a genuine comparison, and someone to call who is not a call centre.

  • Make sure you are covered while parked and trading, not only while driving
  • Tell us what your regular events require so the policy meets it from day one
  • Insure the equipment and generator, not just the vehicle
  • Check whether your commissary or host site imposes its own requirements

Common questions

Food Truck Insurance, answered

Does commercial auto cover my food truck while I am serving?

Generally no. Auto cover applies to the vehicle in use as a vehicle. Once you are parked and trading, injury and illness claims fall to general liability, so both policies are needed.

What certificates do events ask for?

Most festivals, breweries and private venues require a certificate naming them as additional insured, often with a $1 million general liability limit. Requirements vary, so send us the paperwork and we will confirm the policy meets it.

Is my cooking equipment covered?

Under property or inland marine cover written for the equipment, yes. The auto policy covers the vehicle body, not the fryers, refrigeration and generator inside it.

Am I covered for food poisoning claims?

Foodborne illness claims fall under general liability products cover. Good temperature records and food handler certification help both at claim time and at renewal.

Do I need liquor liability if I serve alcohol from the truck?

Yes — the same liquor exclusion applies to mobile operations. If you sell or serve alcohol at any booking, liquor liability needs arranging separately.
